EMU Construction Update—June 23, 2015

The project continues to move forward in June with new finished space in the renovation turned over, areas within the existing building turned into construction space, and the new wing making steady progress towards building enclosure completion. As evidenced by the large hydraulic scaffolding equipment on site, masonry has begun on the north elevation of the North Wing and will work steadily from west to east. The installation of sheathing and waterproofing continues to be installed clockwise around the building. Framing is progressing through the North Wing and Hearth portions of the new construction allowing roof joists to be set at the west penthouse and roofing to begin at the auditorium.

Preparations are being made for the delivery of the air handling mechanical units, set to be delivered around the third week of the month. Interior build-out continues on all floors of the North Wing including miscellaneous concrete, steel stairs, fireproofing, framing, MEP, drywall, and painting. The bulk of the walls have been topped-out with drywall on the first and second floors and majority of MEP roughed-in. Framers have also begun to install top and bottom track on the third floor with select early piping installed. The second floor of the Hearth has received preliminary polish and protection allowing work to begin on the exterior and interior framing. MEP rough-in continues below in Hearth level one and concrete crews are making steady progress towards completing the breezeway column and stair five cladding walls.

A milestone was reached with the completion of the new Holden Center, allowing existing basement areas, previously occupied, to move into the demolition phase. Walls have been framed out in the ground level pub and KWVA areas. Footings have been placed below fountain court to allow for structural steel supports of the new stair six opening to be installed later this month. Several concrete wall in-fills have been completed and water closet carriers have been set as the build-out of the main ground level restrooms progresses. Outside of the new Holden Center entrance preparations are underway to install new drains and hardscape.

On level one of the existing building, demolition has completed in the Fishbowl and food services area. Soon floor remediation, framing and MEP rough-in will be underway. Brick removal for the future structure is ongoing in the fountain court area and steel is installed below the existing international lounge for the future stair 11 opening. On the existing buildings roof, stone parapet caps have been removed in preparation for re-waterproofing the parapets and re-roofing later this summer.
