Angela Lauer Chong, JD, was appointed vice president for student life in August 2024. She joined the University of Oregon after 26 years of experience in higher education. Most recently, Angela served as the associate vice president for student affairs and dean of students at Florida State University where she led the health, wellness, and student support portfolio of the Division of Student Affairs.
Angela brings a wealth of higher education experience to her work including student success; diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging; violence prevention; student development; legal acumen; policy development; crisis management; revenue generation; health and wellness administration; and institutional governance.
As vice president, Angela is responsible for leading the Division of Student Life, an organizational unit broadly responsible for the engagement and support of students at every juncture of their UO experience, from first enrollment through graduation, including career readiness.
The Division of Student Life includes the Office of the Dean of Students, the Erb Memorial Union, the Department of Physical Education and Recreation, and the University Career Center, as well as six functional areas that report through the vice president’s office: assessment and research, major student events, financial services, human resources, parent and family programs, and student government engagement and success. In addition, the vice president serves as the central administration liaison to the recognized student government, the Associated Students of the University of Oregon (ASUO).
Angela’s scholarly writing, research, and presentation interests include time management and value alignment, student success, health and well-being, higher education law and policy, constitutional law, campus safety, fraternity and sorority life, student conduct, and conflict resolution services. In addition, she has testified at numerous state legislatures and institutional governance boards on issues including health and wellness, mental health, suicide prevention, sexual assault on college campuses, freedom of expression, civil discourse, and legal compliance in higher education. Personally, her passions include holistic wellness, spending time with her twin boys, and exploring the world with her husband.
