Supporting our LGBTQ students and Student of Color
The University Counseling Center is reestablishing two support groups this term–one for students of color and another for LGBTQ & questioning students. Every term, the University Counseling Center offers free, confidential group therapy to students who wish to improve their personal well-being. These groups offer students who may feel disconnected or undervalued on campus a safe and supportive place to share their experiences and gain support from one another especially in regards to their underrepresented identities.
Other therapy groups at the University Counseling Center include ones that primarily attend to healthy communication, grief, body image, anxiety, substance use, and emotion management.
Really though—Why join a group over individual therapy?
Individual therapy is great for many concerns, but in actuality some times group therapy can be that much more powerful for students in feeling supported. Group therapy gives students the opportunity to learn from their peers and develop new ways of interacting with others. Therapy groups also provide affirmation that students are not alone in their struggles amongst their peers in a way that individual therapy cannot. While the prospect of group therapy may seem intimidating, participants consistently describe it as a helpful and positive experience.
