Drug Free Schools and Communities Act

In accordance with the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act Amendments of 1989, the following letter is delivered regularly to all University of Oregon students:

Dear Student,

The Drug Free Schools and Communities Act Amendments of 1989 requires that all institutions of higher education receiving any form of financial assistance to provide each student the following:

  1. written information regarding applicable federal, state,  and local laws regarding alcohol possession and use;
  2. campus policies and standards of conduct regarding alcohol  and drug use and the related sanctions
  3. a description of health risks associated with the use of  alcohol and drugs and
  4. a description of treatment and counseling programs available  on campus.

We have approximately 20,000 students on our campus-the majority of who do not misuse or abuse alcohol or other drugs.  Like many campuses and communities across the nation, however, the University of Oregon does have students who misuse and abuse these substances.  The illegal use and abuse of alcohol or other drugs by these students interferes with the academic learning process and places the safety of individuals and the campus community at risk.
