UNIVERSITY OF OREGON
DEPARTMENTAL/ORGANIZATIONAL AWARDS
The following awards are also presented
at the University Awards Ceremony. They are selected, however, by their
specific departments separate from the general university awards process.
Athletic Department Awards
Emerald Athletic Award: Sponsored jointly by the UO Athletic Department
and the Oregon Daily Emerald, it is presented annually to a UO senior
athlete on the basis of achievement in athletics, service, and scholarship.
Doyle Higdon Memorial Trophy: The trophy honors former football and
track star Doyle Higdon who was killed in an accident between his sophomore
and junior years at the university. Sponsored by the sophomore and junior
classes, it is awarded to a student athlete at the end of the sophomore
year for achievement of excellence, scholarship, and citizenship.
Jackson Award: The Jackson Athletic Trophy is awarded annually each
spring to the outstanding graduating senior female athlete. The recipient
is selected by her peers from each of the university women’s intercollegiate
sports based on outstanding athletic ability, scholastic achievement,
leadership ability, and inspiration to other athletes. The recipient
is awarded with a miniature scale version of the trophy.
Edmunson/Davis Scholarship: The Ella Travis Edmunson
and Mercy Travis Davis Memorial Scholarship fund is administered by YWCA,
and was established for the purpose of awarding scholarships to sophomore,
junior, or senior undergraduate women who have demonstrated potential
leadership, superior scholastic abilities, and who are in need of financial
aid.
International Student Awards: These awards are presented
to outstanding international students who have contributed in many different
ways to the cultural awareness on campus and within the local community.
These awards are supported by the International Friendship Family Foundation.
Jewel Hairston Bell: This award is presented to graduating
students of color who are African American, Native American, Hispanic/Latino
American, or Asian/Pacific Islander, whose academic achievements and community
involvement have furthered the cause of diversity at the University of
Oregon.
School of Music Awards: These awards are given to the
outstanding undergraduate performer, outstanding undergraduate scholar
in music, outstanding graduate performer, and outstanding graduate scholar
in the School of Music.
UO Mothers’ Club Scholarships: (Awards subject
to annual availability of funds.) The University of Oregon Mothers’
Club periodically awards scholarships to students of all academic levels.
The selection is based on scholarship, leadership, and service to the
university.
Golda Parker Wickham Scholarship: This scholarship was first given
in 1950 in honor of Golda P. Wickham, dean of women. Dean Wickham was
an outstanding friend and confidante to many students, faculty, and
members of the community. The scholarship is awarded to a student who
is outstanding academically and who has shown significant involvement
in university activities. (Funds may not be available.)
Theresa Kelly Janes Award: This award is in honor of Theresa Kelly
Janes. She was a past president and very active member of the University
of Oregon Mothers’ Club. This scholarship is awarded to a University
of Oregon student on the basis of grades, need, and community and university
service. (Funds may not be available.)
Robert and Opal Clark Scholarship: In honor of President Emeritus Robert
D. Clark’s wife, Opal, in recognition of her lifetime commitment
to the University of Oregon, the award is presented to a student for
outstanding scholarship and leadership. (Funds may not be available.)
George W. Cherry Speech Award: The Department of Speech
holds a speech contest every year. The winner must write, as well as present,
his or her own speech. (Funds may not be available.)
