Jury Duty
If you are at least 18 years old and are a resident of Lane
County, you may be called for jury duty. If you are unable
to report for jury service on your service date, you may request
a deferral. A deferral means that your jury service can be
changed to another date that is more convenient for you during
the next year. To request a deferral, fill in section 3 of
the juror response form and send it in as soon as possible.
You will receive a deferral confirmation in the mail. The
courts do their best to work with the limited availability
of students. The more information you can provide them regarding
your availability, the more easily they can work with you
to meet your needs.
You can also request to be excused from jury service. To
be excused means that you don't have to serve at all for the
rest of the calendar year. While deferral requests are handled
by the Jury Coordinator, excuses are handled by a judge, and
are not granted as often as deferrals. Please read sections
9 and 10 on your juror information sheet for more information.
The deadline for requesting to defer jury service or to be
excused is two weeks before your service begins.
