Crime and Safety

Campus safety is everyone’s responsibility. The most important thing you can do to ensure your safety is to be aware of your surroundings and use common sense. Trust your instincts, if someone or something makes you feel uncomfortable or seems suspicious; report it to the Department of Public Safety.

When walking at night on campus, remember these helpful tips:
• Don't walk alone in the dark
• Always be alert
• Carry identification
• Stay in well-lit areas
• Avoid alleys and dark doorways
• Know where emergency call boxes are
• Use the Assault Prevention Shuttle or a cab
• Let others know where you are, where you are going, and when you will be home.

The Department of Public Safety can provide safety programs as well as serving as your campus resource for the campus crime statistics. http://safetyweb.uoregon.edu/safety/crime_stats.htm

Please don’t leave your valuables unattended while on campus. This includes laptops and other electronic devices. In addition it is a good idea to register your bicycle with the Department of Public Safety http://safetyweb.uoregon.edu/safety/prevention_tips.htm#bicycle

If you live in the residence halls it is wise to keep your door locked when you are not in the room or if you are sleeping. It is also important to take responsibility for your community and not allow people you don’t know into the building. Don’t be responsible for letting a thief (or worse) into the building. If they live in the building they should have a key.

The University of Oregon also has a contractual arrangement with the Eugene Police Department that provides for 3 officers and a sergeant assigned to the campus. These officers can be reached at the Department of Public Safety. http://safetyweb.uoregon.edu/safety/epd_oncampus.htm
