Classroom Behavior Policy

Students are expected at the University of Oregon to take an active role in their education. Additionally, it is the university's belief that much learning can take place not only from the instructor, but also from other students in the class. It is therefore a requirement in many classes that students participate in classroom discussion. While we encourage professors to identify their own expectations for classroom behavior, below are some general guidelines you should expect for behavior in the classroom.

1. Classroom attendance is a necessary part of this course. Students need to get information on how many absences are allowed in each course.
2. Classroom participation is normally a part of the grade certain courses. To participate, students must attend class having prepared the materials for the day.
3. Students are expected to be on time. Class starts promptly at the time designated. Students should be in their seats and ready to begin class at this time. Class ends at the designated time. Packing up things early is disruptive to others in the class and to the professor
4. Students raise their hands to be recognized.
5.Classroom discussion should be civilized and respectful to everyone and relevant to the topic that is being discussed. Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion. Classroom discussion is meant to allow everyone to hear a variety of viewpoints. This can only happen if everyone respects each other and our differences
6. Any discussion from class that continues on any listserv or class discussion list should adhere to these same rules and expectations.
7. Any continued disruption of class will result in a report to the Director of Student Judicial Affairs for a conduct code infraction. After one warning, if the disruption continues, a student will be asked to leave the classroom for the remainder of class.
8. Students are expected to do their own work. Cheating, plagiarism and any other form of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. Please refer to the University of Oregon Student Conduct Code by which all students are expected to abide. Grade penalty that will be issued to you should you be found guilty of academic dishonesty will be (F in course, F on assignment, 1 letter grade lower in course, redo assignment, etc.)

Disrupting a class is also a violation of the Student Conduct Code. Please visit: http://studentlife.uoregon.edu/programs/student_judi_affairs/index.htm for more information about the Conduct Program.
