Substance Abuse Resources—
For Parents
The UO is deeply committed to creating conditions that enhance student learning. We acknowledge that high risk drinking on college campuses across the nation is a very serious issue, and that substance abuse prevention efforts by our campus and community partners can not be done in isolation. We invite you to be involved in your student’s experience and encourage you to have a conversation with your student about high risk drinking and other drug usage as they become a student at the UO.
Stay Involved With Your Student!
- Reinforce to your student that underage drinking is against the law.
- Remind your student that fines and sanctions associated with alcohol or other drugs is costly and negatively impacts their health, safety, financial status, and most importantly, their ability to succeed academically.
- If your student talks about the “party scene” or indicates that “everyone drinks at the university,” they may be among a peer group in a high-risk population. Pursue the issue and reinforce your academic and social expectations.
- Encourage your student to participate in healthy activities such as recreational events, residence hall activities, outdoor programs, or one of our many campus organizations.
If you think your student may have an issue with alcohol or other drugs, contact the Office of Student Life at (541) 346-3216 for more information on campus and community resources.
If your student is being affected by other students violating university policies, please encourage them to speak to a residence life staff member or the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards at (541) 346-1140.
Remind your student that the University provides confidential, free counseling and low-cost health services.
