Substance Abuse Prevention — Community Efforts

The following local and statewide programs are working to prevent substance abuse:

Lane County Coalition to Prevent Subtance Abuse works to prevent substance abuse in Lane County by coordinating, collaborating and linking people to effective resources. Meets the first Wednesday of every month from 3:30-5:00pm.

Oregon College and Community Coalition works to reduce underage drinking through numerous media advocacy events that have raised awareness of such issues as Internet sales of alcohol, the connection between alcohol and sporting events, and other cultural influences on underage drinking.  Contact: David Green, Campus Regulatory Specialist, Oregon Liquor Control Commission, (541) 686-7739

Campus Community Relations Task Force (CCRTF)
The Campus Community Relations Task Force has been in existence since the 1980's and meets quarterly to discuss problems and opportunities impacting the university and surrounding community. The purpose of the group includes creating and sustaining positive, collaborative campus-community relationships, increasing communication between representatives, improving campus climate around issues of safety, and assisting and supporting students in learning about their rights and responsibilities to the greater Eugene community. The group is comprised of UO staff and students, neighborhood representatives, property owners and renters, property managers, law enforcement, businesses, neighborhood associations, city councilors, the Oregon Liquor Control Commission, faith-based communities, media, and 4-J School District representatives. Oregon Partnership is a statewide non-profit promoting healthy kids and communities through drug and alcohol awareness, prevention programs, and a 24 hour crisis line for treatment referrals. They work with schools and community coalitions statewide, and our resource library is open to all to educate on the dangers of substance abuse. Crisis line: 800-923-HELP

Oregon Department of Human Services Mental Health and Addiction Services
The Department's mission is to assist Oregonians and their families to become independent, healthy and safe by:

  • promoting resilience and recovery through culturally competent, integrated, evidence-based treatments of addictions, pathological gambling, mental illness and emotional disorders, and
  • prevention and reducing the negative effects of alcohol, other drugs, gambling addiction, and mental health disorders.
